The Need for a More Equitable Format
Marc Dos Santos, coach of Los Angeles FC, has addressed the issue of a more equitable distribution of matches in the Leagues Cup. According to him, this tournament should evolve into a competition that is equally divided between the United States and Mexico.
Dos Santos acknowledged that there are commercial factors behind the organization of the tournament but highlighted that it is positive that more games are now being played in Mexican territory: 'There's the financial aspect; we all know that many matches take place in the US', he commented.
Personal Experience and Perspective
The coach also shared his personal experience playing for Toluca: 'It's positive that some matches are now taking place outside, like those of Seattle or Toluca. I was at Toluca with LAFC and the atmosphere was spectacular, really spectacular', he said.
However, Dos Santos also recognized the unique challenges faced by MLS teams when competing in Mexico: 'It is very different to play here than to do so in Mexico. I don't think Mexican clubs have a huge disadvantage. Of course, they can win the Leagues Cup, but, in my opinion, for competition to be truly fair, there should be many more matches in both countries', he stated.
Future Vision
Despite these challenges, Dos Santos is optimistic about the future: 'I am very realistic. One thing is playing these games in the US and another entirely different when competing in Toluca, in Mexico City or any other Mexican stadium. It's a different scenario. We are very strong as hosts and still have to grow as a club to maintain that same level when we play away. That is our next step', he concluded.
Additionally, he added: 'What I am clear about is that today MLS teams are on the same level to compete'.
