Puebla has issued an official apology to Club Santos Laguna following a controversial social media post that used a video of the Laguneros' president, Alejandro 'Aleco' Irarragorri, to mock their defeat. The incident occurred after the Apertura 2026 Matchday 5 fixture, where La Franja's victory extended Santos' losing streak to five consecutive games.

In a statement released on Monday, August 24, the Puebla-based club acknowledged the shared content was "completely inappropriate and unfortunate". They stated the material, which has since been deleted, "does not represent the values of respect and sportsmanship" of their institution. "We offer a sincere apology to Club Santos Laguna and its Board," the official text read.

Source of the controversy

The controversy began when Puebla's official accounts used the song 'Color Esperanza' to soundtrack a video of their match-winning goals. Days earlier, a clip had gone viral showing Irarragorri singing that same song, including the line "my hope is green". The post, which contrasted the optimistic lyrics with Santos' difficult sporting moment, quickly drew negative reactions from fans.

Puebla confirmed it has taken "internal measures to prevent a repeat" of a similar situation, though it did not detail their nature or identify those responsible. The club reiterated its commitment to respect among Mexican football institutions and its aim to prevent further episodes of this kind.

For Santos Laguna, the incident comes during one of their worst runs of form in the tournament. The team also occupies a difficult position in the standings, increasing the pressure to reverse results immediately.
